Oral injuries are not fun; in fact, they can be terrifying, overwhelming, and painful. However, even though the experience is not pleasant, it’s best to stay calm and do all you can to improve the situation. If you’re not sure how to begin restoring your oral health, our Midwest Family Dentistry team is more than happy to help you! We recommend that you do the following things:

-Rinse: Rinse your mouth for about one minute with a mild saltwater solution. This will help clean the injured area and reduce the risk of infection. If you’re not sure how to make salt water, all you need to do is mix a half of a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water.

-Apply pressure: Apply pressure to the bleeding site for 15 to 20 minutes. Hold a piece of gauze pad or a tea bag to the area during this time and try to control the bleeding as much as possible.

-Reduce swelling: Control the bleeding, relieve pain, and reduce swelling by holding an ice pack outside the injured area for about 5 to 10 minutes. If this doesn’t make a difference, take a break and then reapply the ice pack for another interval of time.

-See your dentist: If the bleeding doesn’t subside, it’s best to visit your dentist as soon as possible. If your dentist is not able to see you right away, visit the emergency room. Until you’ve been treated, continue to apply pressure to the area with a gauze pad.

If you follow these steps, you will be on the right track toward a successful oral health. For more information and tips, please call 618-797-9940 today and schedule an appointment with Dr. Schuman. Our dental team will be more than happy to help you!
