Are you a victim of chronic bad breath, which is also known as halitosis? If so, there is no need to worry. There are things you can do on a regular basis that can help you eliminate your halitosis and give you the fresh and pristine breath you desire. To help you know a little more, Dr. Laney Schuman and our dental team would be happy to tell you all about those things that can help you reach your hygiene goals.
First, keep up on oral hygiene. You can do so by brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing your mouth daily. It’s also important to brush or clean your tongue at least once a day after you’ve cleaned your smile. Doing these things will help you wash away the odorous bacteria that cause bad breath. Also, it’s important to visit Dr. Laney Schuman every six months. This will help you fight bad breath, especially the bad breath that specifically results from gingivitis.
Second, clean your dental appliances. If you have dentures, mouthguards or retainers, it’s important to clean them on a regular basis, preferably once a day with denture cleaner. If you don’t clean them, food particles and bacteria can stick to the appliances and release a foul smell, causing bad breath.
Third, moisten your mouth. Unfortunately, the medical condition dry mouth is a common cause of bad breath. To prevent or fight dry mouth, you need to produce as much saliva as possible. To help you do so, you can eat healthy foods that require a lot of chewing or you can chew sugarless gum on a regular basis. You can also use saliva replacement products such as Biotene or toothpaste that help with dryness like Enamelon.
Fourth, quit using tobacco products. Tobacco products, especially cigarettes, cause severe foul-smelling breath. They also alter your overall health. So, once you quit smoking, your breath will be pristine and fresh and you will also have a healthier body.
