Dental pulp is the soft area in the center of a tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are located. If the dental pulp becomes infected or diseased, Dr. Laney Schuman may recommend a root canal in Granite City, Illinois. During root canal therapy, our dentist will remove the infected dental pulp, clean the tooth thoroughly, and seal the tooth. If you experience any of the following symptoms, root canal therapy may be needed:
- Severe toothache
- Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Darkening of a tooth
- Swelling and pain in the gums
- A pimple on the gums that will not go away
To prepare for root canal therapy, our dentist will take an X-ray to examine the shape of your root canals and check for any infection in the surrounding bone. An access hole is made in the tooth, through which the dental pulp, bacteria, and debris is removed. Our dentist will use root canal files to clean out your tooth all the way down the root canals. Once your tooth is cleaned, our dentist will seal it with a sealer paste and a rubber compound. The access hole is closed with a dental filling.
