We cannot stress enough the importance of practicing proper dental hygiene. Dr. Laney Schuman and our dental team are proud to educate our patients about dental hygiene in Granite City, Illinois.

Brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles and a head that is small enough to reach all areas of your mouth. You should replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Use a fluoride toothpaste for extra protection against cavities. Brush using small, circular movements with your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle where the teeth meet the gums. Brush all surfaces of your teeth, paying special attention to the front and back teeth. Brush your tongue from back to front.

Floss your teeth at least once a day, using whatever type and flavor you prefer. Gently work your floss between your teeth, curving the floss around each tooth. Gently slide the floss under the gum line. Firmly move the floss up and down several times to scrape off the plaque. If your gums bleed during flossing, this should stop as your gums become healthier.
