If a patient has crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, Dr. Laney Schuman may recommend braces in Granite City, Illinois. Braces are appliances that gently straighten your teeth over time. If you need braces, our dentist will ask you questions about your health, examine your teeth, take impressions of your smile, take photos of your face and teeth, and take X-rays of your mouth and head. Based off of this information, an individualized treatment plan is formed.
Braces are usually made up of brackets, arch wires, orthodontic bands, elastics. Brackets are small squares that are bonded to the front of the teeth, or are held in place with orthodontic bands. Brackets hold the arch wires in place. Orthodontic bands are sometimes wrapped around the teeth and bonded into place to anchor the brackets in place. Arch wires are attached to the brackets and guide the movement of your teeth. In some cases, elastics or rubber bands are attached to the brackets and used to attach the upper teeth and lower teeth. The elastics move the upper teeth against the lower teeth to improve your bite.
At our office, we also offer controlled arch braces, which are also called lingual arches. This device connects two of the molars or premolars in the upper or lower arch. The lingual arch is used as a space maintainer for the teeth. Lingual arches can also be used to expand or reduce space in the arch.
